Roses & Thorns
art practice
INTRODUCTION
The ‘Roses & Thorns Activity’ is a mindful art practice that promotes self-reflection and self-awareness. This activity prompts students to identify positive moments, new ideas, and identify areas where they may need/want support.
Practice Time:
10-15 minutes
Prep Time:
2 minutes for practice introduction and supply distribution
Mindfulness Skills:
Mindful art, Self-reflection, Self-awareness
Supplies:
Paper, Coloured pencils, crayons or markers (3 colours per student)
Distribute a sheet of paper along with coloured pencils, crayons or markers to students. Each student should have 3 different colours to work with.
Pick your first colour to draw a rose on the page (however, students may draw whatever type of flower they wish) Using the same colour, have students write about a highlight, success, or positive moment that they have experienced in the past week.
Next, have students pick their second colour. Use this colour to draw a stem and flower buds to go along with their initial rose/flower. Using the same colour, prompt students to write about something they are looking forward to in the near future. Students may also write about new ideas they have with this colour.
Finally, have students pick their last colour. Use this colour to add thorns to the stem of their rose/flower drawing. Using that same colour, prompt students to write about a challenge they experienced or something that did not go well for them this past week.
Admire your beautiful artwork and reflect what you’ve written!
Reflection Questions:
How can you mindfully celebrate your highlight or success from this past week?
How does the thing you are looking forward to make you feel? How can you act on the new idea you’ve written about?
How can you support yourself and show self-compassion given the challenge you have written about? If possible, how can your teacher help you?
