art practice
INTRODUCTION
The ‘Origami Activity’ teaches students how to fold an origami cup. This mindful art practice fosters patience and emotional-awareness as students follow instructions.
Practice Time:
10 minutes
Prep Time:
2 minutes for practice introduction and supply distribution
Mindfulness Skills:
Mindful art, Emotional-awareness, Patience, Problem solving
Supplies:
Square pieces of paper
Fold the square paper corner to corner to make a big triangle. Press the fold down nicely.
Take the bottom-right corner of the triangle and fold it over to the left side. A small triangle tip should stick out from under this fold.
Flip the folded paper to the other side, so your last fold is facing down on the table. Repeat step 2 – take the bottom-right corner of the triangle and fold it over to the left side. A small triangle tip should stick out from under this fold.
You’ll see a little triangle sticking up. Fold the top layer of it downward.
Turn the paper over and fold the other triangle flap downward too.
Carefully open the top and you’ll see your paper cup is ready to use!
Unfold the cup and refold it! See if you can recreate the cup using only the folds you initially made!
Reflection Questions:
Did you find this activity easy or difficult? Why? Either answer is okay!
What feelings came up while folding your origami cup? Relaxation? Frustration?
How did you feel when you were told to unfold your cup and make it again without instruction?
Was refolding the cup using your original folds easier or harder than following the craft instructions?
