start (18)

Sit in a comfortable, upright position. Breathe normally, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Lose your eyes if that feels comfortable to you.

start (23)

Notice the sounds around us. What sounds are already here and how do they come to your ears?

start (24)

What sounds do you notice coming from outside? Maybe you hear the hum of traffic, wind blowing in the trees, sirens, or a dog barking. What is it that you hear and how do these sounds make you feel?

start (21)

Now, focus on the sounds you hear inside our classroom. Maybe you hear your classmates breathing or moving around. Maybe you notice the whirling sound of the furnace or air conditioning. Take note of the sounds you hear and how they make you feel.

start (25)

Finally, focus on the sounds of your body. Do you hear yourself breathing or swallowing? If you really focus, can you hear your heart beat? What sounds do you notice and how do they make you feel?

Reflection Questions:

  1. How did the sounds you herald during this practice make you feel?
  2. Do you feel more present in the space you are in after engaging in this mindful listening activity?
