Practice Time:
5 minutes
Prep Time:
1 minute for practice introduction
Mindfulness Skills:
Grounding skills, Awareness, Self-regulation, Breath work
Supplies:
None!
Sitting in a comfortable, upright position, take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.
The first sense we will engage with is Sight. Look around the room and name 5 things you can see. Take a mental note of these objects – What colours were your eyes first drawn to? What shapes are these objects? What are these objects used for?
Now, let’s engage in your sense of Touch. Name 3 things you can touch. Make a mental note of these objects – Maybe it’s your clothes or hair, how do they feel? Maybe it’s your school supplies. Perhaps you can feel yourself seated in the chair beneath you.
Now, we will focus on your sense of taste. Name 1 thing you can taste right now – What is it? Maybe you can taste your tooth paste for brushing your teeth this morning. Perhaps the taste of the last thing you ate is still in your mouth. Maybe you are not able to taste anything in particular at all, that is okay! Is the taste in your mouth good or bad? Take a mental note of what you are tasting right now without judgement.
Finally, let’s focus on your sense of smell. Name one thing you can smell right now. Make a mental note of this scent. Feel free to pick something from your desk and smell it – maybe you smell the wood in your pencil or the soft scent of your erasure.
To end this activity, take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth, paying gratitude to your 5 senses.
Reflection Questions:
What was your favourite sense to engage with? Why?
How can engaging with our 5 senses help us be more mindful in our daily life?
